Webinar: January 18, 2025 When the hands are talking: working with clay as a vehicle of repair and transformation

In the webinar I propose an interweaving between the theoretical level of transactional analysis and sensory-motor psychotherapy offering an experience in working with clay in psychotherapy in order to broaden and enrich the tools in our practice.

When people go through traumatic experiences, they often develop somatic symptoms which are the bodily expressions of deep psychological problems resultingfrom the trauma where passivity is also present as an external way of coping behaviourally.

In Transactional Analysis we have concepts such as protocol (Berne, 1961) indicating subsymbolic complexity (Bucci, 2008), which involves affective, somatic, sensory and motor modes of mental processing. In practice, the translation of this concept has been difficult for me in terms of techniques and tools, especially with those clients: children, adolescents or adults where the level of passivity makes “talk” therapy limited in its effectiveness.

I have found answers to my questions about how to work with how trauma is “embodied” in the body in the sensory-motor psychotherapy developed by Cornelia Elbrecht (2013, 2021). This brought to light a process of implicit communication like no other encounteredin the field of art therapy or body-based psychotherapies, namely- the presence of clay as a vehicle of repair and transformation.

Clay is undeniably unique in many ways: it focuses on the direct use of the hands as the primary tool in expressive work. The sensory experiences of “touching clay” are direct and instantaneous communication between the individual and the clay, unlike paint, drawing and other forms of image-based expression.

In the webinar I propose an interweaving between the theoretical level of transactional analysis and sensory-motor psychotherapy offering an experience in working with clay in psychotherapy in order to broaden and enrich the tools in our practice.

The webinar is dedicated to psychotherapists, counsellors and mental health professionals.
